in Lagos - The Algarve, Portugal |
An important
tourist town with many architectural signs of its ancient past, even a
building dating originally back to around 1445 and is recorded as being
Europe’s first building used as a slave-market. The walls of the town are
in most parts remaining after areas of restoration. Attached to the famous
17th century "gold" church of Santo António there is a small museum
of regional items. There are several interesting statues erected
to the famous past figures that are associated with the history of this
town. Browse hotels |

| Golfing
in Lagos by Seb Jay
Two
of the most popular and ideally located golf courses in Lagos are the Palmares,
a par 71 Course known for its imaginative design and impeccable standards;
and the Boavista, again a par 71, with spectacular views of the bay of
Lagos and the Monchique hills. This course is a part of the Boavista Resorts
and was created with as little alteration as possible to the natural landscape.
It even includes a nature reserve for protected species of plants and animals,
which makes this golf course rather special. Your golfing tryst with Lagos
will certainly remain in the memory long after you have left these enchanting
shores.
Historical
Lagos - A little bit of history may serve to enlighten you as to the enormous
significance of your chosen sporting ground. The history of Lagos dates
back to 2000 B.C. The Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, and the Moors were all
attracted to these shores long ago. While you might (unintentionally) leave
your sunglasses behind, they left their marks in more indelible terms in
the form of colossal forts, castles, churches, and other architectural
marvels, most of which were brought to ruin by the disastrous earthquake
of 1755. The great explorer, Vasco da Gama, set off on his famous voyage
of discovery from Lagos too.
Beautiful
Beaches of Lagos - Now with that bit of history under your belt, you might
approach the beaches with more than a casual air. Praia de Dona Ana, Praia
do Camilo, and Meia Praia are all popular tourist destinations. Most of
these beaches have facilities for water sports of all kinds. But the bay
of Lagos is unsurpassed in its beauty and has more to offer with its caves
and rugged rocks. There is also the marina where yachts and boats of all
sizes find their mooring. Another water body of interest is the Barragem
da Bravura, an artificial lake with majestic mountains in the background.
Must-See
in Lagos - From the Praia de Dona Ana you can either drive or even walk
to the Ponta da Piedade which is one of the 'must-see' locations in Lagos.
This is indisputably the most dramatic of rock formations on the whole
Algarve coast and is most impressive when viewed from the sea. There are
boat trips available that take you to and fro from the Portuguese mainland.
Another impressive landmark is the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira, which dates
from the 17th century. It houses the Museu Maritimo - the maritime museum
- in which you can explore Lagos' maritime history. In fact there's plenty
more to see, if you can manage to drag yourself away from the golf course.
Getting
Around Lagos - To really appreciate the natural beauty of the landscape,
and to visit all the landmarks as well as tour the golf courses, it would
be worth your while to hire a car for the duration of your stay. You can
easily do this in advance and request the vehicle of your choice by going
online to Your-Carhire.com - specialists in Portugal car rental services
and then enjoy Lagos to your hearts content.
