History:
Graça
Convent in Tavira was once the Convent of the Cloistered Augustinian Nuns,
which was founded by King D. Sebastião around 1569. It stands on
the castle hill on the site of what was once most likely the Jewish quarter.
Its most noteworthy features are the 16thand 17th century Renaissance cloister,
the façade facing the main square and the central staircase, both
in baroque style. Archaeological traces of Islamic origin were discovered
during the restoration work. As a result, the plans were changed to include
the finds in the building, where they are now partially visible from the
bar. The design includes a multi-purpose hall (in the old church).
History
of Tavira:
Tavira
is the most typical cities of Algarve, which acquired vestige of ancient
civilizations; it was a Phoenician village, it was habited by the Romans
and an important city during the Muslim occupation. Bathed by the Gilão
River, is situated right in the Ria Formosa, 30km from the airport of Faro
and 160 Km from Sevilha.
The
region is characterized by the many sunny days that invite anyone to explore
the region, in a relaxing way and in contact with the best of what the
country has to offer. |
