History:
This fortress, known by the
name of Castelinho (little castle), was constructed with the demand of
El-Rei D. Sebastião, whose name was given to the castle, in a supercilious
place, the Pipas Port.
The construction of the castle
started on 1555, having been given authority to the first alcayde Manuel
de Corte Real on 1575.
The castle is surrounded
by high walls, parts of which are ruined in nowadays. It still preserves
the most characteristic elements and, not a long time ago, used to fly
the Portuguese flag.
History of Angra do Heroísmo:
The Terceira Island, named
Jesus Christ Island in the period that the Portuguese deeds were recognized,
was habited again on 1450 with the command of Jácome de Bruges,
which authority was given by Infante D. Henrique. The first villages were
in the Jewish Port and the Vitória Beach, and then extended
to the entire island.
On 1983 Angra do Heroísmo,
the principal urban city of the Terceira Island, was classified as World
Patrimony by UNESCO. |
