| Beiras -
This
region is made up of two contrasting areas. The extensive beaches and fishing
villages lie along the coast, while in the interior the mountains dominate
the landscape. “Beiras” is the traditional name of a region running
south of Douro river and north of Tagus river.
The region is one of deep
contrasts: the Atlantic coastline, where a temperate climate, white sandy
beaches and the Atlantic pine forests are typical, and the interior where
more forbidding mountains and rocks set the tone.

| Almeida is a town
in Almeida Municipality, Portugal. The council of Almeida presents
some evidences of human presence since the Paleolithic, having detected
cities of the Bronze and Iron Age, as well as evidence of Roman presence.
But it was in the Medieval period that this territory suffered a great
evolution, the consequence of its location near the border of the Portuguese
territory and the creation of the councils guaranteeing the occupation
of this region. For a long period of time, the Côa River defined
the border between Portugal and the Kingdom of Leão. In 1297, with
the Alcanices settlement, by the king D. Dinis, the east territories in
Portugal were definitely integrated. With this larger region, Almeida
and Castelo Bom received greater strategic importance.
Nowadays, the council of
Almeida has three of the councils created in the Middle Ages. The village
with the same name is located in the Mesas Upeland, 7km far from the border
of Spain. The council presents a great historical fortune based in the
existence of two medieval villages, Castelo de Mendo and Castelo Bom, and
the historical village of Almeida. |
