| Portugal
is a country located in the west and southwest parts of the Iberian Peninsula
in South-Western Europe, and is the westernmost country in continental
Europe.
Portugal
has developed a diverse tourism industry especially linked to rural tourism,
golf, beaches and Historic monuments. If you plan on travelling to Portugal
there are many sites that are definitely worth visiting. Portugal is known
for its historic churches and cathedrals that can be found all over the
country. The most distinguish and consequently the most beautiful monasteries
are situated in the town of Batalha (Mosteiro da Batalha), Alcobaça
(mosteiro de Alcobaça) and in Lisbon (Mosteiro do Jerónimo).
Many old churches dating from 15th to 18th century can be found in nearly
all Portuguese cities and towns. Portugal is also a very popular tourist
destination for holiday makers wanting to spend some time in the sun.
The
Portuguese coastline stretches some 800km (496 miles) but the most popular
beaches are situated in the Algarve region because of the warm Mediterranean
currents.
One
cannot truly enjoy Portugal without trying the country's traditional cuisine.
Local dishes can vary from region to region but nearly all offer the bacalhau
(cote fish) as one off their specialities. Bacalhau is one of Portugal's
most famous dishes and is generally accompanied with potatoes, a lot of
olive oil and a glass of local red wide. Wine is produced all around Portugal
with the Douro and Alentejo regions being the most renowned. Local wine
is produced by cooperatives and sold in local restaurants and pubs. Just
like the many dishes, every region has also a local type of bread that
is generally only made and sold in that part of the country. Travellers
wanting to visit Portugal have three international airports in which to
choose from, Porto (North) Lisbon (Centre) and Faro (South). Many low fair
airlines fly daily flights to Porto and Faro so it is always a good idea
to explore for the best deal.
