is ranked after Câmara de Lobos and Machico. The city is named
after fennel, ('funcho' in Portuguese), which grows in abundance on the
island. Funchal is passed with a main road linking to both parts

(civil parish) in the concelho (municipality) of Santa Cruz in the Madeira
Islands. Gaula has been inhabited since the 15th century and its
first settlers where northern Portuguese, northern Italians, French and

an ideal location for walking along the levadas and also for golfers. Two
