Top 5 Things to Do In Lisbon
Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is full of fun and exciting things to do while on your holidays. Because Lisbon is located right on the water, the city is home to a fortress built in the 1500s to guard the harbor, one of the worlds largest aquariums, unique and locally inspired music, as well as, gardens that house rare and endangered plants.

Lisbon offers one of the largest aquariums in the world. The Oceanarium’s central tank is the size of 4 Olympic size swimming pools. The Oceanrium has 25,000 different, fish, sea birds, and mammals living together in a single environment. The aquarium is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the winter months and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the summer months. They are open on December 25th as well as New Years Day.

A must see in Lisbon is the Belem Tower. This tower was built in 1515 as a fortress to protect the harbor. The Belem Tower is built in a Manueline style that features sculptures of St. Vincent as well as statues. One statue is of Our Lady of Safe Homecoming, a symbol of protection for sailors on their voyages. The Belem Tower is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. October through April and 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. May through September and is closed every Monday.

The Tropical Gardens, or Jardim do Ultramar, is another must see located in Lisbon. The Tropical Gardens were created in 1906 and still house the same ponds, towering palm trees, as well as, over 4000 other species of tropical plants. The Tropical Gardens is full of rare and even endangered tropical and subtropical trees and plants. The Tropical Garden is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For a nice and relaxing evening one should find a Fado House. A Fado House in Lisbon offers visitors a chance to really experience the local music scene. There are two styles of Fado, Lisbon and Coimbra. In Lisbon one performer always sings the music while in Coimbra it is usually performed by a group of male university students.

Last but not least one should check out the Santa Justa Elevator. The architect, an apprentice of Gustave Eiffel, built the Santa Justa Elevator to connect the lowest and highest points of the city. Atop of the tower is a café that allows visitors spectacular views of the city. For excellent deals to Lisbon and across europe try Travelmatch.co.uk
